European collaboration:

Ireland’s software industry recruiting software professionals in Spain

A clear demonstration of the strength of the Irish software industry, ten Irish owned software companies travelled to Madrid this week to meet with Spanish software professionals, in an effort to fill some of the 1500 vacancies in this indigenous sector.

Targeting English speakers with at least 3 years experience in software and an interest in moving to live and work in Ireland, It’s Happening Here (the recently launched umbrella brand for the Irish owned software industry) hosted a careers fair in central Madrid on Thursday September 27th. The interest shown and the high level of qualification of the 300 software professionals who attended the fair is an indication of the high regard in which the Irish software industry is held inSpain.

Finding IT talent is currently the single biggest challenge for Irish software companies. Strongly focused on exports the industry is one ofIreland’s fastest growing indigenous sectors delivering double digit growth in exports year on year. It is crucial to attract talent to the industry to ensure continued growth at this level. With a pool of experienced and highly qualified software professionals,Spainoffers a real solution. Spanish software developers and engineers have a very good reputation inIrelandand are highly sought after.

Speaking from Madrid this last week Jarlath Dooley, chair of the industry working group behind IT’s Happening Here and HR Director in Version 1 said:

The quality of software professionals we met here yesterday was excellent and this initiative has created a new and badly needed channel for our recruitment. We expect to recruit at least 8 of those we met yesterday alone and will continue to focus on Spain as a source of top quality personnel.’

Raul Marigorta, Market Advisor inEnterpriseIreland’s office inMadrid added:

‘Many Spanish people are aware of the innovative and creative nature of Irish software companies and their commitment to excellence. This initiative offers Spanish software professionals the opportunity to build their careers in some of the most exciting software development companies in the world and offers Irish companies the opportunity to continue to grow their technical teams. It is an excellent example of win-win collaboration between two European member states.’

This is a guest post from Liz McCarthy, Business Development Manager at Annadale Technologies in Kerry. Aside from taking part in the ITsHappening here software jobs in Ireland promotion,  Liz talks through some of the ways they kickstart non-IT students into jobs in the Software Industry. And if you’re interested in working at Annadale, find out more on their Jobs page.

In response to the limited availability of talented programmers graduating from Irish Universities (and the parallel trend of large multinationals handpicking the top students from relevant disciplines), we at Annadale Technologies decided to address the source of the problem – the tendency of high-achieving pupils opting for high-points courses such as Medicine and Law on their CAO, rather than technology courses such as Engineering and Computer Science.

We felt that this tendency is linked with the fact that most young Irish people are not exposed to the technology which powers the gadgets they use every day, as the standard of IT education in the Irish classroom leaves a lot to be desired. We felt that as part of our mission of growing our Kerry-based software company we should reach out to students and demonstrate to them first hand how exciting and fulfilling a career in software development can be.

This is a guest post from Jack Downey of Lero. Jack will be speaking at EI’s Software Architecture Recovery & Consistency event in EI Eastpoint Dublin at 9am on Friday 27th May. For more details and booking for this free event, email Mary.Heasley[at]Enterprise-Ireland[dot]com.

Software architecture is the structuring of software systems in a manner that achieves desirable qualities (modifiability, improved performance, security) for its owners. However, particularly in respect to legacy software systems, an explicit architecture may never have been put in place. Even if an explicit architecture was put in place during system design, often this architecture is violated during implementation or subsequent evolution. The overall result is that there are many software systems without an explicit architecture, or with an implementation that is inconsistent with its designed architecture. In either case the ‘desirable qualities’ that could have been achieved are lost.

This Lero  seminar will present a number of strategies that can help redress these issues. Specifically, it will present a technique called Reflexion Modelling (and its associated prototype tool) which is aimed at recovering the architecture of software systems. Likewise it will present an approach (and prototype tool) that aims to heighten consistency between the implemented architecture and the designed architecture. It will illustrate the utility of these approaches by presenting case studies that we have performed at IBM Ireland and QAD Ireland.
