As more and more Irish consumers start using smartphones with built-in GPS and social media functions, location-based marketing (sometimes known as ‘local search marketing’) has become an increasingly interesting opportunity for small businesses.

The rise of location-based services has seen real integration of the digital and physical worlds – perhaps for the first time, at least in the business sense.

For SMEs who are not in the mobile application development business, the best use for mobile apps is, first, to create a mobile storefront that allows mobile phone users to purchase your products and services and, second, to promote your brand among mobile users. Choosing the right mobile device will save your company money, improve the efficiency of your mobile workforce and streamline your company’s workflow. But with so many mobile devices on the market today – from the humble mobile phone to netbooks, smartphones and the soon-to-arrive ‘smartbook’ – it can be difficult to make that choice.

Smartphones are mobile devices with high-level operating systems that offer increased functionality over standard mobile phones. Examples include phones running Apple’s iPhone OS, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile, Nokia’s Symbian, Research in Motion’s BlackBerry OS, Google’s Android, Palm OS and other Linux-based systems.

In effect, smartphones combine some of the power of a PDA (personal digital assistant), such as email and multimedia playback capabilities, with standard mobile phone functions like SMS and voice calls.
