If you handle personal data from clients or customers, you need to be aware of your legal obligations. A staggering 94.2 percent of Irish organisations store personal data, and yet 50.7 percent do not have a formal retention/destruction policy, according to a new survey by the Irish Computer Society.

The government agency that oversees data protection in Ireland is the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (DPC). Backed up by two Data Protection Acts (1988 and 2003) and separate Electronic Privacy regulations, the DPC’s role is to ensure that those who store data comply with data protection principles, and to provide guidance on how those principles can be applied in the workplace.
