Reminder:

SAPs database technology, SAP HANA is a tool for companies to manipulate large volumes of data and to build faster analytics. SAP is keen to engage with SMEs of all kinds to exploit its potential and has established a Start-Up Focus Forum to invite companies of all sizes and stages of development (up to 40m turnover) to get involved.

SAPs founder said that the Start-Up Focus Forums were the best initiative the Group took last year.  SAP is strategically committed to facilitating SMEs access to this high speed, big data platform.  Dublin has again been chosen to host a Start-Up Forum on Wednesday 22nd May which this year will run along the lines of a Showcase of SMEs.    Ultimately, if an SME successfully develops its solution on the HANA database they can get access to SAPs customers.

14 EI clients presented last year, 8 of whom were accepted onto SAPs Accelerator Program.  Ostia, one of the 8, say “Our experience of SAPs Start Up Focus Forum was entirely positive.  SAP took an approach which was more like that of an innovative SME sized organization than a large corporate.  With the credibility of being able to partner with SAP in this way, we have generated a significant number of opportunities which we are working on with SAP”.  Head of Sales & Marketing, Ostia Software Solutions Ltd

There is potential for more companies to partake this year as, taking on board feedback, the Program has been made more SME friendly and involves access to a virtual resource centre.  To get started e-mail or call: andrei.grigoriev@sap.com or call +353-87-790-7267.

Cloud-Series

A Morning Seminar: Cloud Metrics – The Key KPIs for Scalable and Profitable Success

Time: 8.30 am to 13.30 pm, Tuesday, 5 March 2013

Venue: Gibson Hotel, Point Village, Dublin 1

The continued forecast growth of the IT global market presents a very significant opportunity for the Irish Software Industry. The advent and take-up of Cloud Computing in particular, changes the landscape for software delivery in the future and opens up global potential for Irish companies. The challenge will be how companies respond to the market drivers, identify and quantify opportunities and develop technologies and business models to exploit them to the full.

The focus of this seminar is on how Cloud based software companies need to embed the best practise financial metrics on both a day-to-day and Board level to ensure long term growth and scale.

Cash strapped software companies will only have one real chance to get it right when they go to market with their Cloud products. Having a detailed understanding of these metrics, starting with Cost of Customer Acquisition, is fundamental if there is to be any chance of success.

This is a guest post from Cian Ó Maidín, of Irish Mobile Web and Apps development company Nearform. Cian is promoting a conference called NodeDublin on 18-19th October (www.nodedublin.com) which should be of interest to many EI client companies in ICT.

What is Node.js?

Node.js is a revolutionary new system for building cloud based services, Node.js uses the JavaScript programming language.

Revolutionary – how?

(1) Node.js allows JavaScript (the common programming language of the web) to be used to develop cloud services, enabling web programmers to do much more than ever before.
(2) Services built using Node.js have performance characteristics which are in line with the C programming language.
(3) Node.js utilises tiny amounts of computer system resources when compared with other systems like .NET and Java, this means that services written in Node cost significantly less to run.
(4) Node.js will run on everything from a low power device to a big server which means it can be deployed in a huge range of environments.
(5) Node.js is designed for building high volume high concurrency cloud services

It considered the perfect system for implementing real-time-web applications, which are at the forefront of the next generation of start-up web companies.

Matthew Ernesse (Lead Node.js Engineer for Yammer), speaking shortly after Microsoft acquired Yammer for $ 1.3bn said;

“We would like to thank the Node.js project, as we can directly attribute a large amount of our acquisition value to our widespread use of the Node.js system. Node.js allowed us to outpace our competitors (iterating faster) which ultimately lead to the acquisition of Yammer by Microsoft.”

Other companies using Node include Linkedin, Joyent, EngineYard, AppFog, Amazon Microsoft (the Windows Azure team) as well as some Irish startups.

Why NodeDublin?

There is no other major Node.js conference in Europe in 2012. All the major names in the worlds Node.js community are coming to Dublin to talk to the European Node.js community for 2 days – establishing Ireland as the focus point for the Node.js community in Europe.

Who’s Attending?

Key influencers in the future of cloud and online services such as Google, Microsoft, Joyent, Mozilla, Engine Yard, Intel, and many others will be there. The conference will be held in an intimate setting where both speakers and attendees will be able to hang out together.

Use the Code EIBCON for a €100 discount on a ticket to NodeDublin on October 18-19th (www.nodedublin.com). Contact details for Cian on that the site for more information.

Ireland’s software industry recruiting software professionals in Spain

A clear demonstration of the strength of the Irish software industry, ten Irish owned software companies travelled to Madrid this week to meet with Spanish software professionals, in an effort to fill some of the 1500 vacancies in this indigenous sector.

Targeting English speakers with at least 3 years experience in software and an interest in moving to live and work in Ireland, It’s Happening Here (the recently launched umbrella brand for the Irish owned software industry) hosted a careers fair in central Madrid on Thursday September 27th. The interest shown and the high level of qualification of the 300 software professionals who attended the fair is an indication of the high regard in which the Irish software industry is held inSpain.

Finding IT talent is currently the single biggest challenge for Irish software companies. Strongly focused on exports the industry is one ofIreland’s fastest growing indigenous sectors delivering double digit growth in exports year on year. It is crucial to attract talent to the industry to ensure continued growth at this level. With a pool of experienced and highly qualified software professionals,Spainoffers a real solution. Spanish software developers and engineers have a very good reputation inIrelandand are highly sought after.

Speaking from Madrid this last week Jarlath Dooley, chair of the industry working group behind IT’s Happening Here and HR Director in Version 1 said:

The quality of software professionals we met here yesterday was excellent and this initiative has created a new and badly needed channel for our recruitment. We expect to recruit at least 8 of those we met yesterday alone and will continue to focus on Spain as a source of top quality personnel.’

Raul Marigorta, Market Advisor inEnterpriseIreland’s office inMadrid added:

‘Many Spanish people are aware of the innovative and creative nature of Irish software companies and their commitment to excellence. This initiative offers Spanish software professionals the opportunity to build their careers in some of the most exciting software development companies in the world and offers Irish companies the opportunity to continue to grow their technical teams. It is an excellent example of win-win collaboration between two European member states.’

National College of Ireland

At the start of the year the Government launched the ICT Action Plan aimed at addressing the gap in high-level skills in the IT sector. It saw the introduction of full time conversion courses allowing people to reskill to gain ICT qualifications.  The National College of Ireland are offering two courses under this initiative; a Higher Diploma in Computing in Software Development and a Higher Diploma in Web Technologies.  The students are about to enter semester two of this exciting inaugural year. These courses are aimed at having students “Industry Ready” and as such a work placement is an integral part of the courses.  We are looking for industry partners who are open to discussing taking a student on a work placement from the end of January of next year.  Regardless of the size, structure or location of your company we are interested in hearing from you.

What is the benefit for you?

  • Many of these students have been in the workforce already and so bring with them a breadth of work experience across a variety of disciplines
  • The students are extremely motivated and eager – and as the students will have completed their academics by the time the work placement starts, there is an opportunity to extend the work placement beyond the minimum of 3 months. This potential is unlimited.
  • Fantastic opportunity to trial a ‘potential’ recruit
  • Placements  can provide the ideal opportunity to foster links with the National College of Ireland
  • Your team can benefit from skilled assistance for specific project work at lower cost
  • Placements can also provide your staff with valuable people management and mentor experience

What are the backgrounds of the students?

The students are from a diverse range of backgrounds. There are recent graduates from Analytical Science and Music technology, experienced CAD Designers, Engineers, Maths Teachers, instructional designers together with those who have no technical experience keen to kick-start a career within IT.

Where might a student fit in within your organisation?

  • IT development projects
  • IT support
  • Network administration
  • Software development
  • Software programming
  • Testing
  • Web design and development
  • Database development

The placements start in January 2013 and I would be very happy to discuss how your company may get involved.  E-mail me at kate.coughlan@ncirl.ie or phone me (Kate Coughlan) directly on 01-4498586.

Testimonials

Datalex

“At Datalex we are a world class provider of travel ecommerce. We bring those standards to our search for top talent.

We were delighted therefore to participate in the Student Work Placement Programme at the National College of Ireland. Our experience both of the student and the support from the college itself has been excellent. We would have no hesitation in recommending The National College of Ireland’s Work Placement Programme and look forward to partnering with them in the future”.

AMT Sybex

“The NCI Student Placement Programme has assisted AMT-SYBEX by allowing such activities as internal software development, research, testing, analysis and release preparation to be ably carried out by our NCI placement student.  In general it opens companies up to fresh ideas, new perspectives and approaches to particular areas, increasing awareness in the relevant discipline, and also provides a fast track link for the employer to a future workforce.

The NCI Student Placement Programme establishes a good link back to third level to provide the student with exposure to the workplace, to various work related skills, allowing them to put academic theory to practice and assist with personal and professional growth.”

This is a guest post from Marcus Reid,  ISV Partner Manager of Oracle Ireland.  Marcus worked extensively with Irish software companies as part of Ireland at Oracle OpenWorld 2011.  We’ve had very good client feedback (video) about  OpenWorld last year, and Oracle Ireland are trying a new direct approach to the show in 2012.

Oracle OpenWorld is the largest industry conference in the world with more than 50,000 attendees and more than 5,000 partners.

I would like you to be a part of the conversation in our first ever Oracle PartnerNetwork Exchange @ OpenWorld. The Exchange will bring together leaders in all industries from around the globe. You will have the chance to network with fellow partners and Oracle employees, share case studies, participate in onsite certification testing, and learn more about how to leverage your Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN) membership to accelerate your business strategies. This event will include visionary keynote speakers and more than 35+ sessions of targeted partner content.

Conference Pass Type Early Bird (March 31 – August 31, 2012) Pre-Registration (Sept. 01 – Sept. 28, 2012) Onsite (Sept. 29 – Oct. 4, 2012)
OPN Exchange @ OpenWorld $595 $795 $995

From my experience, I think companies get two main benefits from coming to OpenWorld

1. Business Development

  • Attending Oracle Openworld provides an opportunity to network with customers/partners/players in your industry. Type in your industry here and see all related sessions at Openworld.
  • The Irish ISV team are also happy to set up one to one meetings with Oracle executives from the Oracle Business Unit that covers your industry vertical.   This will enable you to understand Oracles solution footprint in your industry and ideally how you can play alongside/partner that footprint.
  • There will also be a series of networking events that attending Irish software companies will be invited to.
  • The goal of OPN Exchange is to provide ISV’s with tools to differentiate themselves, be recognized by Oracle, and preferred by customers.

2. Technology

Oracle OpenWorld goes deep and wide with Oracle technology, providing thousands of sessions and hundreds of demos geared toward helping your company get better results with the technology it has—and plan strategically for the technology it will need to keep ahead of the competition in the years to come. http://www.oracle.com/openworld/learn/index.html

Sample sessions exclusive to the OPN Exchange program include:

  • Strategies for Transformational Projects & Alternative License Approaches
  • Java Application Performance for Exalogic
  • Opportunities in Oracle’s Utilities with Machine2Machine

More sessions can be viewd at the OPN Exchange @ OpenWorld Content Catalogue.
