Better late than never: slightly distracted by the Dublin Web Summit, the Bank Holiday, and some technical hitches, but we finally managed to get the recording of the speakers from the most recent EI Social Media Club up on the Web. The ‘Q’ of the Q&A session at the end is a little ropey, but worth a listen for the good advice that the speakers responded with.

My thanks again to our fabulous speakers Capt. O’Connor and Damien Mulley. Damien mentioned a really useful resource during the session that’s worth a look, http://socialmediagovernance.com/policies.php?f=5, an online database of Government and Non-Profit Social Media Policies.

A big thanks to all those who showed up on the day, stay tuned here on the blog for upcoming announcements on future events in the Social Media Club series.

The third in the Enterprise Ireland Social Media Club series will take place on the morning of the 21st of October, 2011. Following on from our previous two sessions (“Social CRM”, and “Developing Your Corporate Voice”), this seminar is entitled “Best Practice Social Media for the Irish Public Sector”.

This free session will feature leading authorities and practitioners in the area, discussing the current “state of the nation” regarding the use of social media by Irish public bodies, as well as an overview of best practice in evidence in other countries. There will also be an opportunity to hear a case study of how one public body embraced the strategic use of social media, and successfully communicated its value and return on investment to senior management.

Who Will I See?

Damien Mulley, Mulley Communications

Communications consultant, blogger, and seen by many as the lynchpin of the Irish Web community, Damien is also the founder of the Bord Gais Energy Social Media Awards. Based on the experience of working with nominees in the “Use of Social Media by State Body/Org” category, Mulley Communications have produced a white paper on the social media experiences of these organisations: detailing up-to-date statistics on their social media presences; processes in place to manage activity and content; and real-world successes achieved through using these new channels. Damien will present the key findings from this research at the session, as well as highlights from an investigation of how state organisations in other countries are using social media.

Capt. Pat O’Connor, Spokesperson & Media Relations, Irish Defence Forces

Involved with the planning and implementation of the Irish Defence Forces Communications and Public Relations strategy, Capt. O’Connor is the key driver behind the Defence Forces success at the 2011 Bord Gais Energy Social Media Awards, winning the award for “Best Use of Social Media by a State Body”. Capt. O’Connor will share the story behind this success, discussing the “hows” and “whys” of their use of social media, and giving the audience some insight into where they see their use of the channels heading in the coming years.

Event Details

The session will take place in the offices of Enterprise Ireland in East Point Business Park, Dublin 3. Registration will commence at 08.00, and the session will end no later than 10.30. Further updates, including detailed agenda, will be published here on the BestConnected blog.

Almost one week on from our most recent Social Media Club, and I’m still amazed at how many people turned up on a rainy Friday morning: over 100 delegates were on hand to hear Paul Hanly, John Barton and David Bowles share their real-world experiences on using social media to create thought-leadership and build stronger relationships with their customers.

For those of you who missed the briefing, we’ve made the recording of the presentation available on the Enterprise Ireland YouTube channel. The first 60 minutes features the main presentation by Paul and John, and the final 30 minutes is the Q&A session which followed.

I’d like to thank the speakers again, as well as everyone who made it along on the day. We’ll be announcing details of the third Social Media Club in the coming weeks, so please stay tuned for further details.

The next Enterprise Ireland Social Media Club will take place on the morning of Friday, June 17th. The theme of this free seminar will be around the challenges of developing a “Corporate Voice” on the social web. For many companies this is the most difficult aspect of embracing social media: enabling the technology is trivial (anyone can create a Facebook Page), but figuring out what you want to talk about, and who in the company could and should say it, can be the downfall of many well-intentioned social media initiatives.

Thankfully, there’s plenty of good examples of innovative Irish SMEs who have dipped their toes into social media and lived to tell the tale: we’re delighted to announce that the June Social Media Club will feature a case study of how the team at TicketSolve (along with their partners at Steak) have harnessed the power of their staff as social ambassadors  to build a thought-leadership platform and enhance the reputation of the company. (more…)

So I’m delighted to report that our first effort at media recording and production was a success – we had a small number of tech problems along the way, but the recording of our first Social Media Club is now available to view on the Enterprise Ireland channel on YouTube.

The audio quality deteriorates slightly towards the end, and the volume is particularly low around the Q&A session, so turn the speakers to 11 to make sure you catch the pearls of wisdom from the panel.

The presentation is also available for download from SlideShare. The next Social Media Club will be held on Friday the 17th of June: the agenda isn’t finalised yet but stay tuned to the blog and we’ll announce details in the coming weeks. My thanks one again to all the speakers, attendees, and everyone else here in Enterprise Ireland who helped make the seminar such a success.

See you all again in June!

Some good news and some bad news regarding our upcoming Social Media Club seminar on Social CRM. Bad news first: we’re completely booked out, and there’s already a lengthy waiting list. We’re really taken aback by the level of interest from the community (100 delegates registered in less than 7 days), and it’s definitely encouraged us to press forward and host more Social Media Club events in the future – watch this space for further announcements.

So the good news: I’m delighted to announce that Dr. Theo Lynn, Director of the DCU LINK Research Centre, and Maeve Desmond, International Communications Manager at Bord Bia. Theo and Maeve will be joining a Q&A Panel along with Ed, Naylla and Patrick once the main presentations are finished.

The agenda for the event on the 7th is as follows:

11.45 – 12.15

Registration/Networking (light refreshments will be served)

12.15 – 12.20

Jennifer Condon, Divisional Manager, Enterprise Ireland

12.20 – 13.15

Patrick Murphy, CEO, SiliconCloud

Ed Grant, CEO, MXSweep

Naylla Kassam, Marketing Manager, MXSweep

13.15 – 13.45

Q&A Panel

I’m looking forward to meeting you all on the 7th, should be a good event.

The use of social media has become an integral part of our daily lives, and allowed millions of people to interact informally online: building relationships, discovering new ideas and opportunities. We’ve now entered into the era of Business-To-Person communications, and people expect to engage with companies in the same way. In keeping pace with this trend, are you at risk of letting your professional standards slip? How do you track, prioritise and manage the best prospects while still engaging the wider community?

Enterprise Ireland would like to invite you to our first Social Media Club, where expert speakers and companies facing these challenges daily will discuss these issues and give your company the insights needed to make the most of these new opportunities. This free event will take place on April 7th in our offices in East Point, Dublin, from 12.15 until 14.00.
