Software as a Service (SaaS) is being viewed by many as every CIO’s dream – a low cost, convenient application of software that enables a company to focus on its core business by outsourcing all its IT. But can this model support mission-critical systems effectively? And will the one size fits all approach work for companies looking to differentiate themselves with distinctive products and services?
One of my client companies, Exaxe, recently published a white paper which examined the use of SaaS within the life and pensions industry. While recognising the benefits of SaaS in terms of economies of scale, a usage-based cost, outsourcing maintenance and the appeal of ‘anywhere’ access, it highlights the fact that in order to maximise benefits, users are restricted to the range of possibilities that are provided by the software and its standard configurable options.
The paper argues that the primary benefit of SaaS wihin a life and pensions organisation comes from removing only utility support systems from the internal IT department, allowing them to concentrate on the core mission-critical systems.

You may have been reading recently that the contract for helicopter Search and Rescue services was recently signed by the Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey for a value of up to €500m over the period 2012-2022.
The bid manager behind that success, named Denis Thornton was entrusted by CHC to manage a contract bid that involved an incredibly complex set of requirements to deliver a successful bid.
Utilising his procuring experience as a former UK Ministry of Defense Procurement official, technical knowledge of procurement requirements and experience managing one of the largest contracts signed this year Denis has developed a bid development methodologies and a software system known as the Evince system©.

We were delighted with the strong interest in the day and what it genuinely showed us was that this is an unstoppable train which is going to take us to some pretty interesting places !
Some key messages from the day:
- Cloud is moving closer to pay for use ; flexibiliy is the no 1 benefit amongst CIOs ; significant efficiencies can be found by responsibly exploring key partnerships
- End-users are no longer fearful of using SaaS though the applications may be on the periphery – may need a next generation ITIL for hosting external services
- While Cloud still resonates with cost efficiency strategies, there are dark clouds that are simply “me-too” – however there are still interesting opportunities in storage management, compute management and integration software.
- Economies of the cloud difficult to define but certification has potential to differentiate – governance is a key concern amongst CIOs
- Consider the importance of partnerships in the cloud – technology, infrastructure, and sales channels
- The CIO still considers Cloud a risky option for operational reasons as much as technical – consider these issues in developing the opportunties
