Cloud Adoption Event Series (Photo by Mel Maclaine)

Cloud services are reshaping the way companies manage their information and do business and open up tremendous opportunities for Irish companies.  The Irish Internet Association, in partnership with Enterprise Ireland and sponsored by Microsoft, is holding a series of Cloud Awareness and Adoption events for summer 2013 aimed at helping Irish SMEs (from all sectors) assess the potential of using cloud-based business models to support their export growth – the first event takes place in Galway on Thursday 30th May.

These Cloud Awareness Events are specifically designed to help companies to assess the benefits of cloud computing while managing any potential risks.  The IIA Cloud Working Group developed the Swift10 Guide as a tool to help companies do this.  Delegates will hear from other SMEs on how, why and what they moved to the cloud as well as from security and service contract experts who will guide delegates through the process.

Dates for events are as follows:

•             30th May – ClaytonHotel, Galway
•             5th June – NCI, Dublin
•             13th June – Cork (TBA)
•             Sept/Oct event, (TBA) Dublin

EI clients who wish to drive competitiveness, operational effectiveness and efficiency within their companies using the Cloud and the Swift10 Report as a guide can receive funding under the Lean Start programme and should contact their Development Advisor for more information.

There is no charge for EI clients attending these events and they can register directly with the IIA at 01-5424154

Microsoft’s ‘Make it Real’ conference will take place on Thursday April 25th in the Lighthouse Cinema in Smithfield, Dublin City Centre.

This event is different from other cloud events; this time 100% of the speakers will be customers and partners. They will tell the story of how they implemented cloud technology to gain a competitive advantage. You will hear about the business problems they encountered, the solutions they implemented and how you could implement a similar solution and avoid potential pitfalls.

The opening keynote comes from Nokia’s global head of Entertainment development and delivery Andy Toghill, Andy will explain how Nokia uses the cloud to power its global online music store Nokia Music. The closing keynote speaker is Microsoft’s Tim Hynes, Senior Director for Infrastructural Services. Tim will discuss how Microsoft manages its cloud Infrastructure for its 90,000 employees. Other speakers will come from a variety of industry verticals and types of organisations. There will be five different cloud partner firms available on the day to discuss how you can replicate the speakers’ success stories.

This is a guest post from Dave Feenan who is a key promoter of the CloudArena Group. Find out more on the CloudArena LinkedIn group.

We are all used to the saying “Water Water everywhere but not a drop to drink”. Change the word “Water to Data” and do we now have “Data Data everywhere but not a byte makes sense”.

The explosion in the increase of data is becoming one of the top challenges for organisations. Historically this increase was viewed as a requirement for additional storage and backup infrastructure. Today thanks to the availability of web-enabled devices, Business Intelligence and Analytics are now a defacto requirement. Gone are the days of yesterday’s spreadsheets and reports to be replaced by modern Dashboard and Real-Time Data access. Business owners and line managers need access to accurate Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and Metrics to enable appropriate decision making. It is not just businesses that are availing of BI. Smart meters will soon arrive into our homes and look at the level of information now provided when you watch live sport on TV.
Cloud Arena Logo

On Wednesday 19th October, CloudArena will host a free to attend BI and Analytics seminar to discuss this topic. IBM, one of the many organisations taking part, will talk about how they deployed technology to enhance the audience’s real-time engagement at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships. Microsoft, Fujitsu, Cloud Consulting, Staff Balance and Enterprise Ireland backed companies, Jlizard and Treemetrics will all elaborate on how BI is a game changing advantage for us all.

What can BI do for your organisation? You do not want you to get left behind and to be told “Game, Set and Match” to your competitors by your customers.

This event is part of the Innovation Dublin 2011 Festival.To register www.cloud-arena.com

This is a guest post from Michael O’Brien, Head of Marketing at EI client Celtrino.

What I love most about working in Celtrino, and the software sector in general, is that nothing stands still. We’re only back from exhibiting at Microsoft’s World Partner Conference in LA, and already we’re announcing our next step; an  investment of close to €1million to develop our next generation of Smart Admin eInvoicing services on Microsoft’s Azure platform.

Our development, supported by Enterprise Ireland, is driven in part by the natural evolution of the technology as Celtrino has been a provider of SaaS based solutions in the cloud since the turn of 2000, but this announcement also heralds our overseas expansion and will enable a broader international customer base to access services such as e-invoicing and e-payments at a fraction of the cost in the today’s market.

This investment will see us create a substantial amount of new jobs in Ireland, and I am proud to see Celtrino playing our part in the #ITsHappeningHere jobs campaign.

This pure software-as-a-service play will position Celtrino for rapid global growth and is key to our overseas plan; it will enable a broader international customer base to reduce their trading costs by leveraging Celtrino’s supply chain information management and business process automation expertise.

I warmly recognise the role Enterprise Ireland have played in assisting Celtrino transition through the various stages of planning to executing an overseas marketing and sales strategy. Enterprise Ireland’s marketing intelligence and unique personal and industry relationships are invaluable in forging strong relationships with potential customers.

We’ve just spent the week working with the 13 Irish companies at the Enterprise Ireland Stand at Microsoft’s World Partner Conference in LA. That’s not counting the 20 or so other Irish Software companies that also attended the event.  It’s a big conference (about 15,000 attendees from around the world) and the quality of the people that we met was equally impressive.

From an ‘Ireland Inc’ point of view, what struck me how many people that knew about our current economic situation, but also how many people knew about the shining star that is the Irish Software sector. Invariably, these conversations were followed by a question ‘how can we help?’.

On a more personal note, I wanted to capture my thoughts on what worked, what didn’t work for the companies while it’s still fresh in my mind;

  1. Know why you’re going;  Going to an event like WPC isn’t cheap – a week of your time, even before conference ticket and travel costs. Be very clear about why you’re attending and who you need to meet.  Answers ranged from Market Research, to initial partner contacts, to seal relationships built online in the previous 12 months. (more…)

We’re working with three key multinationals as part of Enterprise Ireland ‘Best Connected’ software strategy around their main partner events.  More details of your chance to register to be on the EI stand at the Microsoft World Partner Conference is below, quick links to register for any of the three events are;
