A smart investment in localisation could be the killer move for Irish companies targeting European online customers whose spending will remain buoyant in 2012 according to Cipherion and the Irish Internet Association:

Multilingual website translation and Search Engine Marketing (SEM) are forecast to be in strong demand by Irish organisations operating overseas, according to research released November 24th, 2011 by leading global communications provider, Cipherion Translations, based in Dublin. The research, conducted amongst Cipherion’s client base in tourism, hospitality, life sciences, exporting, technology and multinational sectors, reveals that 58 per cent of companies will require website translation services in the next year and 35 per cent will be rolling out international Search Engine Marketing and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) campaigns.

The research also indicates that French, German, Spanish and Italian will remain the focus for exporters and multinationals, with over 70% of respondents indicating a future requirement for these languages.

According to the UK’s Centre for Retail Research over 85% of European online retailing spend of €202.9 billion will be made by non-English speaking consumers in 2011. Commenting on these figures, Mark Rodgers founder and CEO of Cipherion said: (more…)

Great video from Armac explaining what they do. It has Airplanes.  It has bundles of cash.  It could save your holiday.  And it’s a cartoon – what’s there not to like?

Much easier to understand than ” Software for Aviation Inventory Managment and Optimization“.

Are you a software company with a good video explaining what you do? Leave a comment, or contact me directly and we’ll try and feature you on Bestconnected.

This is a guest post from Steve Gotz of the Centre for Next Generation Localisation  (CNGL)

I am excited to announce that the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL) will offer a ‘sneak peak’ at the localisation and global content intelligence technologies of the future, when we present our annual Innovation Showcase on 16th November 2011 at Croke Park Convention Centre, Dublin. The showcase will highlight the economic and societal impact of work at the SFI-funded centre, while also presenting a selection of exciting technologies that are ripe for commercialisation via a variety of channels.

Why should you attend?

Technologies such as machine translation, text analytics, speech processing, digital content slicing and adaptive hypermedia are radically changing the way businesses operate on a global scale. Attendees at the Innovation Showcase will have the opportunity to not only view fundamental scientific advances that will be impacting their businesses in the not-to-distant future but also a chance to discuss real-world challenges and opportunities with some of the leading academic minds in the fields.

Our showcases have become particularly fertile grounds for companies looking to solve specific problems or find new product offerings. I look forward to a productive day working with the indigenous community of Multinationals and SMEs to ensure that Ireland remains at the forefront of content management and localisation innovation.

CNGL’s Innovation Showcase is being presented as part of the Innovation Dublin Festival 2011. The event open to the public and free to attend; however spaces are limited. For full details and to register, see www.cngl.ie/showcase

Better late than never: slightly distracted by the Dublin Web Summit, the Bank Holiday, and some technical hitches, but we finally managed to get the recording of the speakers from the most recent EI Social Media Club up on the Web. The ‘Q’ of the Q&A session at the end is a little ropey, but worth a listen for the good advice that the speakers responded with.

My thanks again to our fabulous speakers Capt. O’Connor and Damien Mulley. Damien mentioned a really useful resource during the session that’s worth a look, http://socialmediagovernance.com/policies.php?f=5, an online database of Government and Non-Profit Social Media Policies.

A big thanks to all those who showed up on the day, stay tuned here on the blog for upcoming announcements on future events in the Social Media Club series.

Over the past ten years, a new ‘Software Economy’ has emerged. Driven by fresh business models such as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), and reinforced by a wide range of Internet-based technologies such as Cloud, Open Source and Web 2.0, this particular economy-based process is transforming the software industry, enabling Irish companies to reach global markets with a pay-per-use revenue model.

Enterprise Ireland provides a suite of programmes designed to help companies make the occasionally challenging transition to SaaS, internet marketing and product management, and to this end is assisting with a Product Management programme that brings together international and Irish expertise to take, initially, 20 Irish software companies on the product management journey.

Product Management is a key organisational function that oversees a product through all stages of its life-cycle, from start to finish, as well as spanning both product development and marketing functions. Adhering to a product management process ensures that companies are able to identify the right market and the right customer, build the right product, clearly articulate the business value of their product to their target market, deliver the product to the customer through the most effective channels and business models, and – crucially – know when to cease investment in a non-viable product or service.

From the programme, companies will learn how to connect their marketing and product development functions in a manner that will ensure their products always reflect precisely what the customer wants – and what the customer will pay for.The programme is aimed at software companies that, typically, have been trading for at least five years, have a strong record of R&D and exports, and whose revenues (again, typically) should be in excess of €2m.

The Product Management Programme will start in early November, and will be completed in April of next year. For further information or booking please contact Eilis McNulty by telephone (01-8794000) or by email [emcnulty@dolmen.ie]

I’ll be attending TravelHuddle Dublin,  Ireland’s largest online travel marketing conference next Thursday, November 3rd. Speaker line-up looks pretty good, and I’m hoping to pick up some tips and tricks in what must be one of the most competitive sectors online. One of the key weaknesses I see in Irish SMEs is a lack of awareness and capability around Customer Relationship Management (both processes and tools) so I’m particularly keen to see what I can learn and pass on from thoughtleaders in an industry where this is a vital part of their marketing activities.

So the good news is that the kind folk over at Merrion BD (the conference organisers) have provided me with two complimentary tickets for readers of the BestConnected blog: the first two individuals to leave a comment below will each receive a full pass for the day, including access to the Demo Zone.

Hope to see you there.

Update: tickets are gone, thanks for all the replies. Congrats to Patrick and Mary, is winging its way to you shortly.

The third in the Enterprise Ireland Social Media Club series will take place on the morning of the 21st of October, 2011. Following on from our previous two sessions (“Social CRM”, and “Developing Your Corporate Voice”), this seminar is entitled “Best Practice Social Media for the Irish Public Sector”.

This free session will feature leading authorities and practitioners in the area, discussing the current “state of the nation” regarding the use of social media by Irish public bodies, as well as an overview of best practice in evidence in other countries. There will also be an opportunity to hear a case study of how one public body embraced the strategic use of social media, and successfully communicated its value and return on investment to senior management.

Who Will I See?

Damien Mulley, Mulley Communications

Communications consultant, blogger, and seen by many as the lynchpin of the Irish Web community, Damien is also the founder of the Bord Gais Energy Social Media Awards. Based on the experience of working with nominees in the “Use of Social Media by State Body/Org” category, Mulley Communications have produced a white paper on the social media experiences of these organisations: detailing up-to-date statistics on their social media presences; processes in place to manage activity and content; and real-world successes achieved through using these new channels. Damien will present the key findings from this research at the session, as well as highlights from an investigation of how state organisations in other countries are using social media.

Capt. Pat O’Connor, Spokesperson & Media Relations, Irish Defence Forces

Involved with the planning and implementation of the Irish Defence Forces Communications and Public Relations strategy, Capt. O’Connor is the key driver behind the Defence Forces success at the 2011 Bord Gais Energy Social Media Awards, winning the award for “Best Use of Social Media by a State Body”. Capt. O’Connor will share the story behind this success, discussing the “hows” and “whys” of their use of social media, and giving the audience some insight into where they see their use of the channels heading in the coming years.

Event Details

The session will take place in the offices of Enterprise Ireland in East Point Business Park, Dublin 3. Registration will commence at 08.00, and the session will end no later than 10.30. Further updates, including detailed agenda, will be published here on the BestConnected blog.
