Not many people are aware that their inventions, trade marks, logos, designs and business names be protected under Intellectual Property (IP) law. IP is, therefore, an extremely valuable asset that can not only prevent your competitors from copying your products but can provide a unique marketing and selling advantage.

In order to make companies more acutely aware of IP, a one-day training course on Intellectual Property and Licensing will be held in Dublin on April 26th. Organised by DeepWater Training, the course will be of interest to companies, researchers, legal and finance professionals, as well as to those that support the commercialisation of research in HEIs and state agencies.

Delivered by Dr. John McManus – an IP expert with a career profile in research and product development, company start-ups, technology transfer and IP management techniques – the course will cover topics that focus on the constituent elements and importance of IP, the patent system, managing, evaluating and exploiting IP, and understanding licence terms.

The course will take place in Dublin’s Clarence Hotel, 9.15am-5pm. The fee is €450 (VAT exempt) with a special early bird registration fee of €395 for bookings received prior to March 30th. Places on this course can be booked via email here [akavanagh@deepwater.ie]

This is a guest post from Teresa Dillon of the Science Gallery, Dublin. Teresa is looking for good Irish Software and Service Companies to take part in ‘Hack the City’ – an exhibition running from June to September.  It could be a great showcase for your new App, Service, Mashup or Startup, with potential funding available to help you realise the concept for the event.

Currently more than half of the world’s population lives in towns and cities. This trend is expected to continue. Between 2025-2030 of the approximate 8 billion people who will live in the world 5 billion will live in cities. Yet the majority of our city infrastructures are based on inherited historical layouts and systems.

Science Gallery’s 2012 flagship exhibition and festival Hack the City will rethink our cities from the ground up through the spirit and philosophy of the hacker ethos – to bend, mash-up, tweak and cannibalise our city systems, to create possibilities, illustrate visionary thinking and demonstrate real-world examples for sustainable urban futures. It will capitalize on Dublin city’s history, legacy, population and infrastructure, transforming the city itself into a nimble “playground” and live urban hack lab.

We’re looking for proposals for experiments, exhibits, events, apps, mashups and visualisations which go beyond Science Gallery in to the city of Dublin and even connect multiple cities globally. Potential venue partnerships include The Ark, Temple Bar, Dublin and international partnerships with ZER01 in San Jose, California. We are especially interested in (more…)

This is a guest post from Paul Rellis of Microsoft, about the opportunity that Cloud Computing brings for Ireland.

A core Enterprise Ireland focus for 2011 will be  helping companies recognize the cloud opportunity, enable business transformation to meet that opportunity, and of course, helping EI clients grow exports and export led jobs. Microsoft, as a multinational is a key part of this ‘BestConnected’ story.

A question on a lot of people’s minds at the moment is where to next for Ireland?  What areas do we need to focus on to restore competitiveness?  It was for this reason that Microsoft Ireland commissioned an economic impact report by Goodbody Economic Consultants to quantify the opportunities offered by rapidly creating a Cloud Computing Industry in Ireland and to identify the next steps to deliver on its promise.   The findings are contained in the report entitled – ‘Ireland’s Competitiveness and Jobs Opportunity: Cloud Computing’ which was published in January.

And the findings are clear.   The Cloud Computing Industry will deliver jobs, help restore competitiveness, create new export markets and attract Foreign Direct Investment. (more…)
