The latest report from the Advisory Science Council published on the 15th December 2009 details the contribution of PhDs to industry. Among the findings was that while only 29 per cent of R&D firms employed PhD researchers in 2007, these companies accounted for 70 per cent of business expenditure on research and development. LotusWorks was founded by CEO Fergal Broder in Sligo in 1989. The company operates as three divisions: Lotus Technical Services, Lotus Construction Management and Lotus Construction Services. The group was rebranded from LotusAutomation to its current name earlier this year and has offices in Ireland, the US, the UK, China and Canada.
The group provides technical, construction and management services to the likes of financial institutions, power project developers and industrial construction companies. LotusWorks originally employed just three staff but today over 300 people work for the group. (more…)

First, an interesting IT security statistic: 52 percent of data breaches arise from accidental leaks and vulnerabilities, according to a recent global study by International Data Group. The iPhone has captured significant mindshare since its launch in 2007, and in particular the application development model and the iTunes App Store, which has had over two billion downloads of over 100,000 applications.
There has been a move from games and other ‘fun’ applications to software companies looking to add mobile channels for their products. Enterprise focused companies like Intuition are developing iPhone applications in order to add to the value of their core product or service.
