Tekpak Automation is a Wexford-based company that designs and manufactures robotic loading machines and packaging lines for companies. Tekpak is also the UK and Ireland distributor for Imball, an international manufacturer of carton and case erecting and closing machines.

Tekpak’s clients – which include Green Isle, Northern Foods, R&R Ice Cream, the Greencore Group and Heinz – are primarily based in Ireland, although some of its customers are located in places like Poland and Nigeria. Tekpak employs a team of ten, made up of full-time employees and contractors. It also has a support office in Leeds in the UK. (more…)

Smartphones are mobile devices with high-level operating systems that offer increased functionality over standard mobile phones. Examples include phones running Apple’s iPhone OS, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile, Nokia’s Symbian, Research in Motion’s BlackBerry OS, Google’s Android, Palm OS and other Linux-based systems.

In effect, smartphones combine some of the power of a PDA (personal digital assistant), such as email and multimedia playback capabilities, with standard mobile phone functions like SMS and voice calls. Smartphones are hybrid devices that serve as equal parts mobile communications centre, day planner and personal assistant. (more…)

Minister Conor Lenihan Launches Science, Technology and Innovation Report  – “Strategic investment in R&D is key to economic recovery” – Lenihan.
Mr. Conor Lenihan T.D., Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation today (Thursday 22nd October 2009) launched the Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Report ‘Delivering the Smart Economy’. “This report sets out our achievements to date under our Science Strategy and how investment has resulted in significant jobs growth at locations around the country” the Minister said.

Enterprise Ireland’s National Commercialisation Awards
There were 3 winners - Professor John Lowry Head of Chemistry at NUI Maynooth and founder of Blue Box Sensors Ltd., Dr. John Colreavy, Director of CREST at DIT and Dan Barry, Senior Researcher in DIT’s Audio Research Group. Congratulations to them all.

Set up in 2003 by Mathieu Gorge, VigiTrust initially provided security training to the Irish market. From there it was built into a consultancy practice and started re-selling security products.

In 2007 VigiTrust developed an e-learning solution called ESEC which helps firms with compliance issues. Then in 2008 Enterprise Ireland provided VigiTrust with funding to create a second product called SAMS. This system helps firms keep up to speed with data protection and payment security standards. VigiTrust has ten employees based in its Dublin office and two more at its Manhattan office in the US. (more…)

SMEs of all sizes can now access technologies that have traditionally only been available to large firms. They can do so without having to buy new hardware, software or pay much up-front costs. And these technologies can be scaled to meet the needs of the SME as it grows or, indeed, shrinks.

This can all be achieved through cloud computing, a catch-all term for IT services that are provided over the internet. However, there a number of barriers that SMEs have to overcome if they want to successfully use cloud computing. (more…)

Once the preserve of large enterprises, unified communications (UC) tools are now enabling SMEs to integrate different communication platforms – such as instant messaging, VoIP telephony, SMS and video conferencing – in real-time. This integration enables companies to streamline communications across different platforms and improve collaboration among staff in different locations – increasing efficiency and saving money in the process.

A 2008 survey from business communications firm Damovo found that the Irish economy is currently losing almost EUR693 million a year due to inefficient communications. The study found that some 24 percent of Irish office staff are using unified communications to tackle this issue, and an overwhelming 91 percent of them believe UC tools are useful for their work. Almost 400 potential investors wanted to attend the Big Ideas Showcase 2009 in Croke Park next Tuesday 13th October but we can only facilitate 250 as there are one-to-one meetings to schedule with the 21 inventors who will present their new technologies and business plans on the day.
